E-bike Camp'n'Ride trip in Tuscany: 245 km of trails, from Carrara to the island of Elba

Six days exploring Tuscany with your own camper, guided on the finest trails in the region: 245 km between Carrara, the Lucca area and the island of Elba, on an e-bike. Hilltop villages, descents entirely on singletrack, hand-picked spots, and at every stage the Italian table, from antipasti on a terrace to a rib of beef grilled over a wood fire. Level 2.5/4.

Highlights

  • A road trip with your own camper

You travel with your home on wheels, we take care of the spots, the routes and the guiding.

  • 245 km of trails over six days

From Carrara to Elba, every day starts and ends at the camper, with no pointless transfers.

  • Tuscany at the table

Antipasti on a terrace after the descent, a mountain hut facing the sea, dry-aged beef over a wood fire: the food is part of the programme.

  • Hand-picked roads and spots

The Serchio valley, the Apuan Alps, the ferry crossing: the driving is worth the trip in itself, and every site is chosen for campers.

  • A Swiss Cycling certified guide

He knows the trails, adapts the pace to the group and handles any mechanical issue.

  • Day 1: welcome to Tuscany

    Distance35 km Climbing1,200 m Descent1,200 m

We meet on a well-placed site in the Carrara area, famous for the white marble quarries carved into the Apuan Alps since Roman times. You leave your camper there and set off on a first e-bike route in these mountains that drop almost straight into the sea.

The climb is a pleasant one, on a small mountain road through chestnut groves and traditional villages. Over a pass, then back down a mule track with a fine view, before a last section of flowing, playful trail brings us back to the campers.

Time for a beer or a glass of wine with antipasti on a village terrace, then a short transfer to the evening spot: an outstanding agriturismo, where dinner is a dry-aged rib of beef grilled over a wood fire, served with the best the region has to offer. Charcuterie from the valley, pecorino, olive oil and Tuscan wine: the evening alone is worth the trip.

  • Day 2: the Lucca area

    Distance35 km Climbing1,600 m Descent1,600 m

We set off straight from the campers. The country road climbs through old hilltop villages, quiet and remote, up to the summits overlooking the plain of Lucca, the Tuscan city still enclosed in its Renaissance walls.

Lunch stop at a welcoming mountain hut with a sea view, then a long descent home, entirely on singletrack: fast sections and tight switchbacks through the forest, demanding at times but never dangerous.

At the end of the day the journey continues at the wheel: about an hour and a half along the Serchio valley, one of those Tuscan roads winding between river and stone villages, to the next spot. Getting there is part of the adventure.

  • Day 3: the Lucca area

    Distance53 km Climbing2,400 m Descent2,400 m

We ride out from the spot for a long loop through a nature park on the slopes of the Lucca hinterland. The climb alternates singletrack, forest road and quiet back roads, with fine views and traditional villages along the way, punctuated by a ristretto on a terrace.

At midday, lunch at a charming address where the e-bikes recharge while we enjoy a home-made local speciality. Then the last kilometres of climbing to a magnificent ridge, before a rolling descent through pastures, forests and balcony mule tracks, finishing in a pine wood shaped specifically for riding.

Back to the campers by bike, and dinner at the local trattoria.

  • Day 4: from Lucca to Massa, then over to Elba

    Distance45 km Climbing1,200 m Descent1,600 m

The only day with a shuttle: the van drops us at the foot of the range separating the Lucca hinterland from the Massa coast. A fine singletrack climb through the imposing marble quarries of the Apuan Alps, a white, mineral setting with no equivalent anywhere.

Over a pass, picnic at the top, then down a historic trail with a magnificent panorama over the Apuan Alps and the Tyrrhenian Sea. Shuttle back to the campers.

In the afternoon the road takes over: transfer to Piombino, then boarding the ferry with the campers for Elba. Italy's third-largest island is a concentrate of the Mediterranean: 147 kilometres of coastline, coves of white pebbles, and a mountainous interior rising to 1,019 m at Monte Capanne. Its iron-rich hills have been mined since the Etruscans, and this is where Napoleon was exiled in 1814, ruling for ten months before leaving for the Hundred Days.

Night in the wild, with a generator available to recharge bikes and campers.

  • Day 5: Elba

    Distance52 km Climbing2,400 m Descent2,400 m

Four pedal-powered loops on the eastern side of the island, on trails with a distinctly Mediterranean character and 360-degree views over the sea. They run through the maquis, that dense mix of tree heather, cistus, myrtle and mastic that fills the air as soon as the sun warms it, before reaching the pine woods and chestnut trees higher up.

The climbs are gradual and leave time to take in the old iron mines, the villages clinging to the slopes and the watchtowers left by the Barbary raids.

Lunch at a restaurant, recharging possible, then two more loops on trails typical of the island. Night in the wild.

  • Day 6: Elba, end of the trip

    Distance25 km Climbing1,400 m Descent1,400 m

Final laps on the western side, the wildest part, dominated by the granite massif of Monte Capanne, where the maquis gives way to rock and to plunging views towards Corsica on a clear day.

The day ends at the table, as it should: antipasti, primi piatti and a generous main course at a good local address.

Back to the campers, heading for Portoferraio, the capital founded by Cosimo de' Medici with its sixteenth-century fortifications, to take the ferry back to the mainland. End of the trip.

  • Six guided days of riding
  • Pitches for the campers
  • The day 4 shuttle, for the crossing to Massa
  • Mechanical support and spare bike
  • Riding tips
  • Souvenir photos

Not included

  • The ferry crossing to Elba, both ways
  • E-bike and protection rental (optional, in the registration form)
  • Breakfasts, meals and drinks
  • Personal insurance
  • Tips
  • Anything not listed under « Included »

Your camper

A camper or converted van is compulsory: that's the very principle of Camp'n'Ride. You travel with your vehicle, we take care of the spots, the routes and the guiding.

What to bring on board

  • A 12/220 V inverter: it lets you charge the e-bike batteries during transfers, a real bonus on the bigger days
  • A long power cable to reach the sockets on serviced sites
  • Your own generator if you have one: a generator is available on site, but the more there are, the faster everyone charges
  • Italian plug adapters

Water and services: we regularly stop at serviced areas during the trip, so you'll be able to fill your fresh water tanks and empty the grey water without having to organise it yourself.

Your bike

Six consecutive days of riding, with climbing every day: your e-bike needs to be in perfect condition at the start.

The bike

  • Full-suspension e-bike, 140 to 180 mm of travel, fully serviced
  • Mixed-terrain tyres, 2.3" or wider, reinforced casings, set up tubeless with fresh sealant
  • Dropper post
  • Brake pads in good condition
  • Charged battery and charger essential: charging happens every day, at lunch or at the evening spot

Spare parts

  • 1 compatible derailleur hanger
  • 1 inner tube
  • 1 set of brake pads
  • 1 quick link matching your chain

No suitable e-bike? We offer one for rental, to be booked in the registration form.

Your gear

On you

  • Open-face MTB helmet
  • Sunglasses
  • Knee pads, elbow pads recommended
  • Long-finger gloves
  • Bike clothing to suit: days are mild on the coast but cool at altitude

In the backpack (or hip pack with a separate back protector)

  • Back protector
  • Rain-resistant windbreaker and a warm layer
  • Repair kit: tyre levers, tubeless plugs, multitool, chain tool, pump or CO2 cartridges
  • First-aid kit and sunscreen
  • Snacks, something to drink, and cash for meals
  • ID and a charged mobile phone

Required level

This trip is rated 2.5/4: the terrain is varied, between mountain paths, mule tracks and forest singletrack, with descents that are demanding at times but never dangerous. The electric assistance takes the sting out of the climbs, so what matters is comfort on the descents and the stamina to ride six days in a row.

See the level scale

Your camper and the services

The price is per person, not per camper: every rider registers individually, even if you share the same vehicle. A companion who doesn't ride pays nothing.

A camper or converted van is compulsory: that's the principle of Camp'n'Ride. Pitches are included and scouted in advance, quiet and well placed relative to the ride starts.

We regularly stop at serviced areas: you'll be able to fill your fresh water tanks and empty the grey water as the trip goes on, without having to plan those stops yourself.

For charging the e-bikes, bring a 12/220 V inverter, a long power cable and, if you own one, your own generator. Details are in the gear tab.

Meals and food

Meals are not included in the price and are paid on the spot. We strongly recommend eating with the group: the agriturismi and local trattorias we use are quality addresses, selected over the years, where you eat regional produce prepared by the people who grow it. It's an essential part of the journey, and often one of the best memories of the trip.

Eating there also supports the families and farms that welcome us, and who look after us so well because we come back every year.

Culture and regions

The trip links three worlds: the Apuan Alps and their white marble quarries, worked since antiquity; the hinterland of Lucca with its hilltop villages and nature parks; and Elba, land of iron mines and Napoleon's place of exile in 1814.

Between stages, the roads are worth the trip in themselves: the Serchio valley, the Apuan passes and the ferry crossing from Piombino are as much part of the journey as the trails.

Climate and season

Tuscany enjoys a privileged Mediterranean climate. Days are generally mild and sunny, ideal for riding, but mornings and higher ground stay cool: bring a warm layer and a windbreaker. The programme is adapted day by day to the conditions.

Safety

The region is very safe. We take particular care in choosing the overnight spots, quiet and suited to campers. On the bike: small group, professional Swiss Cycling guide, a briefing before every descent and mandatory protection.

Ready to go?

Convinced? The group is deliberately small: hit the registration button and book your spot.

Want to travel with your own group, on another date? We also run this trip privately: send us your request.

A doubt, a question? Write to us, we answer quickly.

  • Is the price per person or per camper?

The price is per person, not per vehicle. If two of you travel in the same camper and both ride, that means two registrations.

A companion who doesn't ride, however, pays nothing: just let us know when you register, so we can plan the pitches accordingly.

  • Do I really need a camper?

Yes, a camper or converted van is the basis of the Camp'n'Ride concept: you travel with your vehicle while we take care of the spots, the routes and the guiding. Pitches are included in the price.

  • How do we charge the batteries during the trip?

Several options combine: charging at serviced sites in the evening, a 12/220 V inverter to charge during transfers, a generator available on site, and the lunch stops, where charging is often possible. Remember your charger and a long power cable.

  • Where do we sleep?

In your camper, on pitches chosen in advance: agriturismo, serviced areas or wild spots on Elba. They're included in the price, quiet and well placed relative to the ride starts.

  • Can we fill up with water and empty the tanks during the trip?

Yes, we regularly stop at serviced areas: you'll be able to fill your fresh water tanks and empty the grey water as the trip goes on, without having to organise those stops yourself.

  • Are meals included?

No, they're paid on the spot, but we strongly recommend eating with the group. The agriturismi and local trattorias we use are quality addresses chosen over the years: antipasti on a terrace, a mountain hut facing the sea, a village trattoria, and that evening at the agriturismo around a dry-aged rib of beef grilled over a wood fire.

It's an essential part of the journey, and it's also what keeps these families going, year after year.

  • What's the usual participant profile?

Very varied, from twenty to sixty-five, often couples or friends who already travel by camper and want to combine a road trip with guided riding.

  • How many people are there in the group?

Usually between six and ten riders, a format that keeps things flexible on the spots and lets everyone ride together without losing anyone.

  • Who is our guide?

A local professional MTB guide, Swiss Cycling certified, who knows Tuscany, its trails and its good tables. He adapts the pace to the group and handles mechanical support.

  • What kind of riding should I expect?

Varied routes, between mule tracks, forest singletrack, balcony paths and pine woods shaped for riding. The level is rated 2.5/4: fine descents, demanding at times but never dangerous, with electric assistance for the climbs.

  • What if I'm tired during the day?

The days start and end at the camper, often in several loops: you can cut a day short, skip a loop or head back early without disrupting the group. The guide adapts as needed.

  • Do we ride with all our gear?

You ride with your day pack: repair kit, windbreaker, water and snacks. Everything else stays in your camper, which we meet again at the end of the loop or the day.

  • What insurance do I need?

Every participant must be covered for accidents, including on a mountain bike, and hold all the cover needed for mountain biking in the mountains: accidents, personal liability, as well as search, rescue and evacuation costs. For participants coming from abroad, the cover must be valid in Italy.

Enduro Maroc is top-notch, with impeccable organization, trails that are as challenging as they should be, and long, long, long descents in a magnificent setting. And for the foodies, the food is amazing.

It doesn't feel like an organized tour, but more like you're on the trails you would have chosen with your group of friends, with the shuttle as a bonus. Bravo, Christian!

I spent a week with Christian exploring the Valais region between Orsières and Zermatt.
It was an incredible experience: the mountain biking challenges, the mountain views, the mountain huts for lunch, and the homemade dinners.
Each day, we took a shuttle to a new location and used the lifts as much as possible, then the e-MTB for additional climbs.
He adapted the descents/traverses according to my abilities and desires. He knows the local trails, huts, and access points very well.
I end this week with gratitude, a sense of wonder at the Alps, and the desire to return for more adventures.
